No one likes bedbugs. But Detroit is dealing with them in droves.

Detroit is new bug city.

The heavy metal town is also the itchiest in the country, topping a new list of the worst metro areas for bedbugs.

Rock City bumped Philadelphia from the top spot on the Terminix list for the first time in four years – but the city of City of Brotherly Love is still scratching in second place.

New Yorkers can sleep easy, since far fewer bedbugs are reportedly biting in the Big Apple. The city plummeted from No. 3 to No. 15 on the scratch-inducing chart.

The exterminating company crafted the flesh-crawling chart by compiling call data from more than 300 Terminix branches across the country.

Bedbug populations have been growing since the 1990s. Experts cite increased international travel, the banning of many powerful pesticides, and outright ignorance of the little monsters, which allowed them to spread. The blood suckers hitch rides on the seams and folds of luggage, overnight bags, folded clothes, bedding, furniture, and anywhere else where they can hide.

“Most of the cities in our top 15 are big tourist and business destinations, making travelers even more at risk for encounters with bed bugs — whether it’s on the plane, at their hotel, in a movie theater or riding in a taxi,” said Paul Curtis, a Terminix manager. “The name ‘bedbug’ is deceptive, as these pests can thrive just about anywhere.”

Ohio appears to have gone from the Buckeye State to the Bedbug State, thanks to five metro areas in the top 15 slots on the list.

Elgin Ozlen of Long Beach, Calif. posted a YouTube video that he claims showed bedbugs in his hotel room at the Astor on Park.

But that is small comfort to a California couple eaten alive at a Central Park West hotel last week. Elgin Ozlen posted a video to YouTube on Jan. 1 showing bedbugs crawling all over his bed at the $ 400-a-night Astor on the Park hotel. The video also showed swollen bites up and down his girlfriend’s arm.
